As a matter of fact, the kids are alright…at design.

as-a-matter-of-fact-the-kids-are-alright-at-design

While I was not a graphic design major in college, seeing some of the student projects that coated the school’s hallways certainly made me pine to be – especially when projects dealt with identity (re)design. So, it is no surprise that I find UnderConsideration‘s recent launch of Brand New Classroom quite exciting.

(For those unfamiliar – UnderConsideration promotes many different flavors of discussion, with sites such as For Print Only and Quipsologies, to challenge and inspire the design community.)

Brand New Classroom works off UnderConsideration’s wildly popular Brand New, a site that highlights world-over identity redesigns, showcasing submissions of brand redesign projects.

Brand New Classroom’s submission guidelines:

Well-known, recognizable brands: We will only include redesigns of real, existing corporations, products, services, or institutions. Also, think broadly, it may be the redesign of a city logo or the identity program for an upcoming sporting (the Olympics) or cultural event (TED). Fake or made-up brands will not be accepted.

Process: An important focus of this site is the process, be it computer or hand sketches, mood boards, or scribbled notes. We want to see that process. If you only have the final result, it better be the next Nike logo, because we probably won’t publish it.

Scope of work: We will accept both single logos or complete identity systems — bonus points for identity guidelines or signage — as well as single packages or full lines.

Freshness: You must be either an enrolled student or a graduate of no more than 6 months. We won’t consider that awesome redesign that you did back in 1994 in Adobe Illustrator 88.

Wow-ness: Only the best work will be published, this won’t be a clearing house for student work. This is not to discourage anyone but to emphasize that great work can be achieved at the academic level. All decisions rest solely on us (Armin and Bryony), so any discomfort can be expressed to our attention.

Selections: After you submit the form below and we have had a chance to review, we will contact you for additional images. If you are convinced that your work is amazing and have no doubts it will be published you may visit this page for formatting information.

Only two projects have been submitted thus far but, hot damn, this is great. With an ever greater ability to promote not only the relative educational institutions but design education itself, UnderConsideration has tackled the importance of emphasizing fresh and engaging ideas.

On top this, the site presents the chance for up-and-coming designers to get feedback from designers and non-designers around the world on projects that will hit close to home.

Get commenting and encouraging, folks; the first submission is a logo redesign I believe the majority of the Internet community is rather familiar with - Google.
